History Foot-and-mouth disease, or FMD, was first noted in the late 16th century, although its virulence was not described until 1987 by Friedrich Loeffler. This disease has been noted worldwide, however many countries have been disease free for years. There have been some recent outbreaks, such as the 2001 outbreak in Britain that was very serious, even causing a delay in a general election. Even more recently, in April 2010 there were 3 animals that tested positive in Japan. This caused the United Nations’ FAO to increase the global surveillance of FMD.
